This step allows our system to recognize you and deliver your portraits to a private gallery.

The Self-Portrait Project is an award-winning, regenerative art + tech ecosystem that began in New York City in 2009. Using our unique mirror-photo system, you are given full agency over your own image: you choose how you are seen, when the shutter is released, and what you leave behind. Over the years, more than 1.8 million self-portraits using our system have been taken around the world, creating an archive of human expression, identity, and connection.
This studio allows us to get back to our participatory art concept roots, and is a return of the hugely popular Pop-Up Portrait Studio we put on in August 2025. We’re re-opening the doors for anyone to step in, take part, and contribute to the archive. The portraits taken here will become part of a collective history, just like the earliest days of the project.
We’ve introduced timed appointments from 1–3 PM in response to the incredible turnout at our last Pop-Up Portrait Studio—where lines stretched down the block. This system is designed to make the experience smoother, more accessible, and respectful of everyone’s time.
Each session is 15 minutes and costs $25 per time slot (not per person, paid at booking).
Your session includes one 6Ă—8" print + digital images, all captured in high-quality black and white.
You’re welcome to take as many portraits as you like during your session, but we encourage a quality over quantity approach—this is a space for intentional self-expression.
This is a participatory self-portrait experience: you are both the subject and the photographer, using our mirror-based system to decide when and how your image is captured.
